History of MSS: 1830-1850 webinar

Chris O’Brien gave an engaging talk, refreshingly without slides, on the early years of the society. Lots of interesting facts, many of which were new even to long-time members. A few I made note of:

  • Beatrix Potter had several male relatives who were members.
  • Emmeline Pankhurst attended some meetings (her husband was a well-known member).
  • Other facts about women in the society can be read in the 2015-2016 Transactions, in which Chris O’Brien has published a paper.
  • In the 1850s the society, like other regional statistical societies, almost disbanded, but continued for the promotion of the same objectives as on founding. Mr Herford was key in this decision, and expanded the society from 24 to 40 members at a low ebb.

16 members attended (more than were registered on meetup!). The event was one where the audience had many questions and some follow-up conversations were scheduled. There was also interest in continuing this historical theme, which Jon Rigby volunteered to lead, possibly with an Archive visit later this year.

23th July 2024.
